France: French court overturns ban of Monsanto corn trait
France's top administrative court has overturned its government's ban on Monsanto's MON810 genetically modified corn.
The GMO corn was approved by the European Commission in 1998 but French agriculture ministers have repeatedly questioned the view that it is harmless to people and the environment.
Last year the French government banned the corn. The European Union allows a member to take such action in the event there is a threat to human health, animal health or the environment.
The French court ruled no such threat exists and the ban is lifted.
The current French Agriculture Minister and Environment Minister issued a joint statement saying the previous administration just didn't make strong enough arguments to support the ban and they have ordered their staff to build a case that is strong enough to justify the ban before the next planting season.
The European Union welcomed the court's ruling saying it shows support for the science and evidence-based approach to genetically modified crop policy in the E.U..
