Belarus and Russia: the next level of integration

23.11.2012

It is possible to combine the capacity of Belarus and Rostov Oblast of Russia to manufacture grain harvesters. The statement was made by Prime Minister of Belarus Mr Mikhail Myasnikovich at the meeting with Rostov Oblast Governor Mr Vasily Golubev on 22 November.

I believe the project is a promising one. If we combine the capacity of two companies, which manufacture grain harvesting machines, we would gain a strong position not only on the Customs Union market but in third countries as well, said Mikhail Myasnikovich referring to the Belarusian company Gomselmash and the Russian company Rostselmash. For now we cannot come up with direct ties to your company owners. But as they say, fruit should grow mature.

The Belarusian head of government remarked that competition is good, wise competition is even better but we cannot afford competing on the same market.

Mikhail Myasnikovich believes it is necessary to step up the integration potential. He sees great prospects in regional cooperation. We have learned to trade rather well. Now we should use more advanced forms of cooperation, primarily the creation of joint ventures, said the Prime Minister.

The Belarusian head of government said: We have not felt the full extent of how work in the Customs Union may be done in view of the Russian Federation's accession to the WTO. Mikhail Myasnikovich said he would like the Single Economic Space to be prioritized. He added that the tariff protection system should be built the way it is accepted in the rest of the world. Meanwhile, companies should learn to operate in conditions of bona fide competition. He believes that rendering all kinds of assistance to national manufacturers and joint corporations should be an important area of work in these conditions.

Addressing the Rostov Oblast Governor, Mikhail Myasnikovich expressed an interest in the experience of Rostov Oblast in raising various agricultural crops. Belarus has started growing unconventional crops such as sunflower and soybeans, said the Prime Minister. The experience of Rostov Oblast agrarians in this area as well as in the enterprises to process turkey meat is interesting.

The Prime Minister underlined that the government is open to discussing any matters.

In turn, Vasily Golubev remarked that during the visit to Belarus matters concerning virtually all lines of activity had been discussed. He underlined that Belarusian partners can be trusted.
