Armenia: The agriculture in Armenia’s Meghri city area can disappear

23.07.2013

If the construction of mining enterprises is not stopped, the agriculture in Armenia’s Meghri city area will completely disappear.

The specialists told the aforesaid to Syunik Deputy Regional Governor Vache Grigoryan, at a meeting at Aarhus Center in Kapan city, “EcoLur” NGO reports.

As per Center Coordinator Ashot Avagyan, the high demand of fruit growing in the communities of the Meghri river basin will eventually disappear, as the river basin will be filled with huge amount of arsenic alongside the heavy metals.

“Meghri will not be able to export its agricultural products to any country. In 20-30 years, when the mining reserves will be exhausted, the water—which is rich with heavy metals and arsenic flowing out of the mines—will eventually contaminate this clear river, as it happened with Kavart River in Kapan, where the water is dead and it cannot be used for anything,” Avagyan noted.
