The average Bulgarian household shops for groceries four times a week and spends 37.5 leva, shows a GfK survey, ordered by the German discount chain "Lidl". It was done between November 1 and 15.

The ratio between good quality and price is the main criterion when choosing groceries for those aged 30-39, those with an average household income above 1001 leva and those who spend more than 61 leva for food per week.

Discounts and promotions are decisive when choosing for those who live in Sofia and the regional centres. They are also important for the people aged 40-49 and those who have a weekly food budget of 20 leva.

Brand recognition is the third most important criterion for those with an average household income above 1001 leva and those who spend more than 61 leva for food per week.

The lowest price is most important with the people aged 60 and above, living in a village, average income per household of up to 500 leva and weekly food budget of 40 leva.

The shoppers who took part in the survey said they prefer Bulgarian brands, because they recognise them, because they offer good quality for the price and because of emotional attachment.
