USA: The USDA has launched its newly refined Livestock Identification Program

24.04.2013

The USDA has launched its newly refined Livestock Identification Program to help trace animals in the event of a disease outbreak.
USDA says the goal of animal ID is to track movement of animals so agriculture and health officials can quickly establish quarantines and take other steps to prevent the spread of disease.
The new program is mandatory, but more limited in scope than a voluntary ID program that failed a few years ago.
The new ID rule applies only to animals being shipped across state lines, and gives states the flexibility in deciding how animals will be identified.
