Turkey: Number of cattle grows to 15 million ahead of Eid al-Adha
The number of domestic cattle raised in Turkey hit 14.9 million in May, showing an increase of 2.8 percent year-on-year during the period of January through May of this year, and the number of sheep and goats grew 10 percent to 42 million in the same period, according to Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat).
In a livestock production report released on Tuesday, TurkStat data indicated the annual change in the number of all kinds of animals produced in the Turkish livestock industry. The number of domestic cattle reached 14.9 million head in May, according to the report, and there were 42.4 million sheep and goats -- 32.2 million head of sheep and 10.2 million goats.
Poultry, which is the most important meat product in the country in terms of the volume of consumption, reached a total of 278 million birds in May. The number of broiler hens was 184.3 million and the number of egg-laying hens reached 89 million. In addition, there were 2.9 million turkeys, 378,000 ducks and 925,000 geese.
Starting on Oct. 3, millions of Muslims in Turkey and around the globe will celebrate Eid al- Adha over four days. During this holiday, Muslims sacrifice an animal as an act of obedience to God.
